Network Video has been installed at Golden Hillock School in Birmingham to successfully protect the external and internal areas of the site and its 900 students.

The school regularly suffered vandalism and theft and action was needed to reduce the mounting costs of repairs and replacing stolen equipment. An existing analogue camera system installed only 18 months previous had not performed as expected, images were poor and expansion was costly. The school with Initsys's support specified an IP based system.

The VerifiedAlarms Network and Initsys IAF Network Video Recorders were specified by the school after demonstration of the remote security of the system. The highest priority for the school was to ensure that remote video access to the cameras on site could not be made ad hoc, this included the monitoring station. The Initsys solution including VerifiedAlarms and Merlin Alarm Receiving Package operated by VSG does not permit remote access to the site unless an alarm is generated. The IP addresses and passwords are encrypted within the VerifiedAlarms network so that signals received at the monitoring station are not readable. The system is operated on a standard ADSL connection without a Static IP address. The full system complies to the European Privacy Laws due for introduction in January 2008.

Consisting of some 72 network cameras connected to four Initsys IAF Network Video Recorders the system is one of the largest installed in a School environment. There are four different manufacturers cameras on the system and 8 different models including Immervision Enabled360° Panoramic Video with a 1.3MP network static dome camera. The Panoramic video installed in Reception, Dining Hall and main Halls provide surveillance of the entire room from a central ceiling mount location. The Initsys IAF de-warps the image in live or playback to appear as a conventional camera.

Initsys Dual Detection signals reliable alarm events to the VerifiedAlarms network and on to VSG monitoring station at high speed. Static cameras provide dedicated detection areas with Pan/Tilt/Zoom cameras in support allowing the remote operator to view the activated areas. Audio challenge is also wired directly from the PTZ cameras.

The Site Security Team at Golden Hillock School have this to say about the system:
“ Our new IP based CCTV system is simple to use and records images of the same high quality as those displayed on screen. The images are also transmitted to a monitoring station, providing out of school hours protection of the school site. By using IP, we also have the flexibility to expand the system to suit the school’s needs by simply connecting additional cameras to the network. The costs are therefore much lower than the previous system upgrades.”

So has the system been a success? The school say“without doubt we have seen a huge reduction in costs of vandalism associated repairs, it is excepted the system will pay for itself within 2 years”.

Jarod Booth from Initsys says “The school were forward in their thinking, they knew what the system must achieve and how secure it must be if connected to the Internet and a remote monitoring station. The Initsys solution exceeds all of the new European Privacy legislation and this gave the school confidence in the solution"
